Background

The 2nd Thai-Japan International Academic Conference (TJIA 2009) is organized by Thai Student Association in Japan under Royal Patronage (TSAJ) with the collaboration of the Royal Thai Embassy in Japan, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Japan (Osaka), Thailand Research Fund (TRF), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), National Innovation Agency (NIA), Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), Japan-Thailand Economic Cooperation Society (JTEC), Old Japan Student Association in Thailand (OJSAT), Association of Thai Professionals in Japan (ATPIJ), and the universities from both Thailand and Japan in board committee.

The TJIA conference has been developed from TJSE conferences, which were organized by Thai Student Association in Japan under Royal Patronage (TSAJ) held in Osaka University in 2006 and 2007. From this regard, in the year of 2006, the 1st Thai-Japanese Student's Academic Exchange Meeting (TJSE) was initiated by Osaka University and organized by TSAJ. Then, the 2nd TJSE was set up in the following year (2007) at Osaka University. After the success of those two meetings, in 2008, the 1st Thailand-Japan International Academic Conference (TJIA 2008) was expanded to a scale equivalent to that of an international academic conference. For this year (2009), developing from the 1st and 2nd TJSE conferences and TJIA 2008, the 2nd Thailand-Japan International Academic Conference (TJIA 2009) will be held at Kyoto University. The 2nd TJIA conference is expected to be an official international conference, which will link Thai and Japanese students, researchers as well as professionals and offer opportunities to exchanging knowledge, learning, and practicing together.

Objective

In accordance with the theme of “Integrated Research for Sustainable Development”, objectives of the conference are as followings:

  1. To be appreciative of the concept entitled “From Research to Sustainable Development” in which the concept of this conference was derived as a next step of the 1st TJIA.
  2. To increase the academic collaborative network among students and researchers in Thailand, Japan, as well as the neighboring countries.
  3. To broaden the perspectives of “Integrated Research” to the academic society in order to deal with the infinite needs of the developing world.
  4. To innovate the practical applications from multidisciplinary aspects obtained from discussions and recommendations in this conference.
Expected Outcomes
  1. Attendants realize in how to connect academic research to real application which is needed by policy maker (national institutions) and user (industry sector) in Thailand, and also to sustainable development.
  2. Thai students and professionals, who are studying and working in Thailand and Japan, have the opportunity to meet and present their works.
  3. Academic networks collaboration among Thai-Japanese students and researchers are established.
  4. Knowledge, learning, practice, and technology between Thailand and Japan are exchanged.
  5. Obtain the executive summary of conference which will be available in proceeding and website.
  6. Thai students will gain a favorable attitude toward TSAJ and be more willing to participate in future endeavors.
  7. The results from this conference will be useful for the establishment and development of several events in the future.
Expected Participants
  • Oral Presentation: 50 presenters
  • Poster Presentation: 50 posters
  • Other Attendant: 100-150 people
Advantages

Being a continuing project from the 1st Thai-Japan International Academic (TJIA) Conference in year 2008, network among students, researchers, and institutions both in Thailand and Japan would be strengthen and expanded through academic exchange and collaboration. The conference would promote the ‘Integrated Research’ vision, which could broaden not only perspective of the students and researchers, but also advance usability of researches in more diverse fields. This concept of sharing knowledge would increase efficiency and lead to consistency in interdisciplinary community, which could finally pave the way for effective sustainability.
